a scots quair, an exhibition catalogue in words.

The year 2010 marks the anniversary of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s death. When i received the assignment to find a market and create a publication concept for his most famous piece of writing it immediately struck me that the timing was ideal for a limited edition celebrating the author. I felt that the current market – with all available editions being affordable paperbacks – confirmed my first notion to aim for a small high-end edition.

Further research lead me to the devastating conclusion that A Scots Quair, which featured on favourite book lists in the past, was in fact not as popular as that fact indicated. Tying in with the thoughts about a limited edition, the market would demand a unique product that delivered more than the mere words.

With my background in design an idea was born rapidly at this stage. My edition was to be illustrated, featuring new talent, young artists, designers and illustrators waiting for that chance to get noticed and published. Illustrations were to come from Scotland, representing the quintessential Scottish character of the beautiful written word, would take centre stage in unfolding Grassic Gibbon’s vision. The book itself became an exhibition catalogue in words.
